Evolution of the Satellite Radar Altimeter

چکیده

The radar altimeters flown on Geos-3 (1975), Seasat-l (1978), and Geosat-l (1985) have amply demonstrated the benefits of high-precision measurements of ocean-surface topography, both to geodesy and to oceanography. Two new altimetry missions are planned: the joint NASA/Centre National d'Etudes Spatiales TOPEx/Poseidon mission, to be launched in 1992, and the Navy's Special Purpose Inexpensive Satellite altimeter mission, to be launched in 1990. Although both instruments draw heavily on previous designs and in-flight experience, the mission requirements have led to two very different instruments. These requirements will be discussed, and the resulting designs will be contrasted with their immediate predecessor, Geosat.

A COMPAcr RADAR ALTIMETER SATELUTE FOR MONITORING GLOBAL CUMATE CHANGE

Altimetry has become the focus of global climate studies because it is the only tool available able to provide both mesoscale (100-500 kIn) and basin-scale (10,000 kIn) circulation information on a global, synoptic basis. . The Atlas-launched Navy Geosat mission proved the capability of the radar altimeter to measure the mesoscale ocean features. A lightsat compatible Geosat Follow-On Technolog...

Statistical Analysis and Compensation of I/q Imbalances in Satellite Altimeter Demodulators

Satellite radar altimeter plays an important role in ocean remote sensing. In China an altimeter will be embarked on the forthcoming HY-2 satellite, which can bring significant benefits to international altimetry society. Modern altimeters adopt I/Q demodulators to detector sea echoes, so the imbalances between the in-phase (I) and quadrature (Q) channels introduce errors on altimeter parameter...

Estimation and Analysis of Precipitable Water Vapor Using GPS Data and Satellite Altimeter

Determination of water vapor in the atmosphere plays an important role in forecasting weather conditions and precipitation studies. For this reason, it is very important to study the tropospheric delay, especially the wet component, which is due to the presence of water vapor in the atmosphere. In this paper, the amount of water vapor was estimated by altimeter satellite radiometer and GPS data...

Sensitivity Analysis of Brown Model Waveform in Radar Altimetry

In satellite altimetry (radar altimetry), the altimeter emits a pulse, with known power, to the earth surface and receives it back continuously to determine of the sea surface height. The time series of the mean returned power is recorded individually at satellite as the so-called waveform. Analytical model for the waveform is first introduced by Brown, which consists of six parameters: signif...

Envisat Radar Altimeter Calibration with High-sea Gps Buoys

The environmental satellite ENVISAT was successfully launched by the European Space Agency ESA in March 2002 and carries among other sensors a radar altimeter which is capable of measuring the height between sea surface and satellite with a precision of a few centimetres. Unfortunately, radar altimeters of this kind exhibit a bias which cannot be determined à priori with help of laboratory meas...
